Sparkle? Certainly did! Sat Apr 2 2005
Some time ago, Della decided to do her bit for Sparkle and arranged a fund raising dinner at the rather upmarket Embassy club in London.

The Embassy is a smart Michelin star restaurant located just off the fabulous shopping mecca which is New Bond Street in Londons swanky Mayfair. Besides the restaurant itself, it also boasts a night club in its basement. Della's a regular and went to a great deal of trouble to take a group of tg's into a totally new environment where I’m sure no trannies had gone before.

I signed up for the dinner months ago, and to be honest I've had much more important things on my mind lately and was in two minds about whether or not to go. In the end I did go, mainly for a distraction rather than anything else.

Now from the phrase “Michelin star” you should have figured out a few things about the club, namely (1) its going to be expensive, (2) its going to be full of people who've never met trannies before, (3) its probably going to be a bit pretentious, and (4) did I mention its going to be expensive? Now if you can figure that out from two little words, then you'll understand how surprised I was to hear people quibbling over the prices. To be honest, I feel that everyone had been given plenty of notice of what to expect.

The meal was apparently lovely (I can't really comment as mine was cold, but it's possible that that was because I was too busy chatting) and it was a joy to see so many good friends together. And I guess I should mention that there where one or two "famous" people there, but I've no idea who they where so that stories a bit weak I’m afraid! I know they where famous because the pack of Paparazzi photographers at the entrance went mad as they arrived. [Quick update: it turned out they where a former boy band member, a rugby international and someone who I initially thought was one of the actresses from "Footballers Wives", but I've just found out was in fact a real footballers wife. Talk about life imitating art!]

What was nice, was that in the general dress-down climate of London, here was a place where some people actually showed a touch of glamour. I was afraid I’d be overdressed but on the next table to mine where a group of truly quite beautiful women who where all dressed impeccably. Alas, we mere mortals all looked rather shoddy in comparison!

As I mentioned, this is a mainstream venue which has probably never had a group of trannies darken its doorstep before. When I go to places like this, I always feel that I'm kind of an ambassador for girls like me. I try and look as good as I can, I try to be friendly and approachable to people, and I try not to make a total ass of myself (I don't always succeed!). But as the saying goes "there’s always one", and I must confess to cringing a number of times tonight at the behaviour of one particular person.

The venue was very mainstream, very “townie”, it was totally hetro and full of alpha-males and as such, I did feel a bit like an exhibit in a zoo at times. But that’s to be expected, and I don't really have a problem with that. As in my experience as the night goes on, peoples curiosity often gets the better of them, you end up chatting and they start to see you as a person rather than as a freak.

I wasn’t impressed by the night club. It was jam packed and seemed to have a younger crowd to that of the restaurant. And I noticed that most of the diners stayed drinking and dancing in the restaurant as opposed to going down to the club.

I didn't actually stay very long and was home not long after midnight so I cant comment on how the night progressed but I had a nice time, and I think Della deserves a pat on the back for taking this on.

Would I go back? Possibly, although I felt the 25% service charge on drinks was rather cheeky on top of the 15% already charged on the food. If I visit a venue like this again though, I’d try and ensure I'm in a much smaller group. I guess I'm a bit of a stealth trannie, I don't like to be the centre of attention and prefer to be able to just get on with my evening without people gawping. And that’s what's bound to happen when any large group of trannies go out together. And in future I'll definitely make sure that I'm not in the company of the OTT trannie I mentioned earlier!

p.s.
I've now added some photos from the evening. You can find them here.
