| Last night I went to the Manchester v Cancer gig at the M.E.N. arena in Manchester. The ambitious goal of the event was to raise one million pounds to fund cancer research at Manchesters Christie hospital.
Now in case you didn't know, the MENs apparently the biggest indoor arena in Europe, so I'd invited 12,000 friends along to keep me company! But of course they weren't actually friends and its fair to say that I was absolutely bricking myself when I arrived.
But my friends Mark and Mandie where fabulous and made sure I was safely in my seat before disappearing back stage to mix with the beautiful people. One of the scariest parts of the night was making my way down the incredibly steep steps to my seat. I was sure I was going to go flying at any second. And of course my seat would have to be in the middle of the row, so I then had to squeeze past a dozen guys to get to it. Thankfully it was very dark in there, and I was flashing enough cleavage that they weren't looking at my face! lol
The concert itself was simply incredible. Mani DJ'd a brilliant set which had everyone on their feet, and his infectious enthusiasm had me grinning from ear to ear.
Then when Johnny Marr started his set with a Smiths song, the whole arena erupted. And later when gig organiser Andy Rourke joined him on stage for another, it was an incredibly special moment. Something I didn’t think I'd ever see.
I was impressed by Badly Drawn Boy and The Doves, two bands I don't really know that well. And then the band I'd been waiting for, New Order put on their Joy Division hats and treated us to some gems. So I had the joy of listening to Love Will Tear Us Apart live too. Another experience I never expected to have.
And who else could lead the finale, but the totally wasted Shaun Ryder! It was a brilliant way to finish, and I had the feeling that no one really had a clue what Shaun was going to do next. Superb!
As I was on my own during the actual gig. I did get a few comments and blokes pointing and shouting abuse. Mainly about not winning Celebrity Big Brother, the cheeky bastards! :o) But as soon as something crap happened, something good seemed to happen too. I'd just had a group of guys pointing and shouting at me as I was walking back from the loo, when I walked through another gang of lads and heard one turn to his mates and say "look at that, that’s pure glamour that is!" lol
And the best was yet to come, as Mark had managed to get me a VIP pass for the after show party so we headed there next. So I got to feel rather fabulous walking down the red carpet in front of all the paparazzi. :o)
I had a great time at the party. Two more bands played and I was thinking, poor sods that’s (literally) a hard act to follow. But I needn't have worried as I was totally blown away by Sweden’s Soak The Sin. I'd not heard of them before but by god I'm sure I'll be hearing a lot more about them in future! They where brilliant. They sounded great, were brilliant to look at, and had great energy and superb edgy songs. And I got a big hug and a kiss off Asa the bass player later in the night when I told her how much I’d enjoyed their set. So I’m definitely a fan!
The second band Puressence where also very good, and did an excellent set too.
Later in the night, I was chatting to Mandie’s friend Heather, saying how much I’d enjoyed the night and all the special moments at the gig, and what an amazing job Andy Rourke had done to bring it all together. It turned out that she was Andy’s girlfriend, and when she realised I didn’t know him, she whisked me across the room to introduce us. Andy was really nice, even though he must have been pestered half to death that night, he still had time for a rather blathered star struck trannie. And of course, all the lucid comments I’d made to Heather went totally out of my head, and I was totally gushing and babbling to Andy. But bless him, he was really sweet, we had a bit of a chat, he gave me a peck and I left him in peace. I was really touched that Heather introduced us, it was a really nice thing to do. And i'm sure Andy was chuffed to bits too! lol
No sooner had I rejoined Mandie, then we bumped into Mani who’d done such a great set earlier. Now The Stone Roses are one of my all time fav bands, and I simply adore Primal Scream. So once again I was seriously gushing and babbling, but it turned out I’d been chatting to his fabulous wife Imelda for most of the night (now she is an absolute star). But he was another lovely guy, and I got another peck for my troubles!
Its just occurred to me that the only people who kissed me all night were bass players. Maybe I’ve finally found my niche? lol
After overcoming my nerves at the arena, I was on a natural high for the rest of the night. But everything far out shone my expectations, it was a truly amazing day. I honestly can’t believe I did it but I'm so glad I did. |
